Prior to the regular hockey season an
initiation program is ran to get beginner skaters on the ice. The program is
available to children 8 and under who are registered to play hockey in SOMHA. Players
who are registered for 8A1 are also able to participate unless there is a
tryout conflict for that team. There are 8 skating sessions per group of
community centers/age categories. The program is all prepared into days and
further broken down into stations. These stations are run by the volunteer
coaches and family members/siblings. Without these people the program would not
be able to run. Helmets are required to be worn by everyone on the ice that is
volunteering. Participant children are
required to wear full hockey equipment including neck and mouth guards.
Prior to the first skate a meeting will be
held to brief the on ice volunteers about the program and its layout. Anyone
who has listed themselves as wanting to coach or assist should be prepared to
take part in the IP program.
